Energy-friendly sites on display

Wednesday, September 30, 2009

Hamilton County will have 20 sites, more than other county in Ohio, in this weekend's annual Solar Tour, a national event featuring free tours of the latest in solar, wind, biomass and energy efficiency.

A total of 38 sites in the Cincinnati and Dayton area are part of this year's tour sponsored by Green Energy Ohio and Duke Energy, among others. This year the tour, which includes 169 public and private sites across Ohio, has been spread over two days and is self-guided using Google software.

Southwest Ohio highlights include:

The Robert L. Schuler Athletic Complex on Deerfield Road in Sycamore Township, which includes a 60 kilowatt solar array, the largest in the region, and a geothermal heating system under the sports fields.

The Fernald Preserve visitors center, a redesigned warehouse on the former Fernald uranium processing site, which has a geothermal heating and cooling system. It has achieved platinum certification, the highest possible in the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program.

The 2-kilowatt solar array installed on the roof of Findlay Market in Over-the-Rhine with a grant from Duke Energy. It's the largest solar array on a building on the National Register of Historic Places.
